Square in a Square Options Workshop

This workshop consists of working with the ruler to show the many different ways or options for which you can use this ruler. During this class we will make a booklet that shows exactly how you cut your squares to make the options. It is a reference booklet that you will keep. Kay will also talk about pattern adaptation. This is a good workshop to acquaint yourself with the ruler and its possibilities.

Fabric and Cutting supply list:
Precut before class:
10-3” light color squares
6-1 ¾” dark strips (selvage to selvage)
2-2 ¼” light strips (selvage to selvage)
1-3” light strips (selvage to selvage)

Bring extra fabric in case we need to cut more strips. The strips don’t all have to be the same fabric, just have lights and darks. You can use shorter strips but bring enough to meet the fabric requirements.

General Class supplies:
1. Sewing machine in good working order, new needle, ¼” seam foot, thread and bobbin
2. Glue stick and 12 sheets plain white paper
3. General sewing supplies
4. Optional: Square in a Square® ruler and any of the other Square in a Square® books. I will bring some for you to use during class if you prefer to try the ruler first.


Constellation Wallhanging

Constellation

In this workshop you will create a small wallhanging of nine stars using the square in a square ruler to make perfect points. Measures 24” X 24”. (kits are available in red, blue, and ecru for $20.00) Square in a Square Book.

Fabric Requirements:
A. 1 yard Navy
B. ½ yard Red
C. ½ yard Light Background
D. ¼ yard Center of Stars (Optional)

You can use colors from your stash

Cutting prior to class:
A. Navy-4- 1 ½” strips (selvage to selvage)
B. Red 4 – 1 ½” strips (selvage to selvage)
C. Light Background 2- 2 ½” strips, subcut into 16-2 ½” squares
Bring the rest of your fabric, it will be cut during class

General Class supplies:
1. Sewing machine-in good working order, new needle, ¼” seam foot
2. threads, bobbins
3. paper bag for scraps
4. fabric for class project
5. 6” X 12” ruler or 6” X 24” ruler
6. rotary cutter-new blade, mat

Americana Quilt

Americana

Done in country style colors of blue, burgundy, and gold; this quilt measures 69”X 75”. It is an easy, fast and fun project made of stars and stripes. This project also uses the square in a square ruler. 6 hrs. You will get a good amount of this project completed within the 6 hrs. (kit is available for $80.00)

Fabric:
A. stars-scraps of dark blue 1 ¾” wide
totaling about 1 ½ yards of fabric or 25 strips
B. 1 ½ yards background-light or gold or a variety to make 60- 3” squares and 120- 2” squares
C. 1 /2 yard –dark colors (blue and navy) center of stars
D. 1 ½ yards red scraps for flag strips
E. 1 ½ yards tan or gold scraps for flag stripes
1 ¾ yards-borders 1 & 3
Second border uses scraps from stripes
¾ yard binding

Dissappearing Star

In this workshop you will create, using the square in a square ruler, an easy pieced lap quilt which measures 35” x 52” Great quilt for using large novelty prints. It is a beginner project. 6 hrs. Square in a Square Book

  1. ½ yard medium color center squares
  2. 1 ¼ yard light color- 1 st row around center square
  3. 1 ½ yards med or dark color – star points
  4. 1 ½ yards med or dark color –star points

Machine Quilting And Trapunto Workshop

Machine Quilting And Trapunto

This is a 6 hour workshop that will help you to learn the basics of free motion machine quilting and trapunto; including how to set up your work space, basting techniques, and learning to feel at ease with free motion quilting and the newest way to do trapunto by machine. This is a technique class. Must have a sewing machine in good, working order and the feed dogs must be able to drop.

1. Sewing machine in good working order
the feed dogs MUST be able to drop
IMPORTANT-sewing machine manual
darning foot or spring foot for free motion quilting
(bring all your feet if you are not sure which one to use)
*2. needles size 80/12
3.14” squares of muslin –at least 12 squares
4.cotton or cotton blend batting
-14” squares
5. polyester batting, can be scraps of batting, not less than 9” square
bring at least 4 squares (used for stuffing in trapunto)
*6. water soluble thread (vanish is recommended)
*7. 50wt 100% cotton ecru or white thread
*8. blue soluble marking pen
9. small sharp scissors for cutting away batting
10. basting pins or spray adhesive* for layering squares together
11. quilting gloves* or finger cots or quilting discs (not required but helpful)
12. paper and pencil

Machine Trapunto Only

This 3 hr class teaches the fundamentals of machine trapunto. You will complete the trapunto work on a project that can be turned into a pillow or wallhanging.

1. Sewing machine in good working order,
   must be able to drop the feed dogs,
   darning foot or spring foot for free motion quilting.
   Sewing machine manual**
2. Four-14” squares of muslin
3. Three 14” squares of batting, cotton or cotton blend
4. Three 12” squares of polyester batting
5. Two 14” squares of fabric of your color choice, something light colored with    minimal design on it. Batiks work nicely.
6. Water soluble thread (vanish recommended)
7. Small sharp scissors for cutting away polyester batting
8. Cotton thread that is a slightly darker color than the fabric of your choice and    ecru thread
9. Some kind of marking system such as water soluble pens, charcoal pencils,
   whatever you prefer to mark a pattern on your quilt top
10. Supplies for machine quilting such as quilting gloves, 80/12 needles


Let's Doodle Workshop 3 Hrs

For those machine quilters who have had experience with free motion and want to continue to gain experience. Learn to do feathers, leaves, stars, and other patterns without drawing them on your quilt. Learn to use continuous line patterns to complement.

This is a trunk show of quilts that were all done by the Square in a Square Method. It is a new innovative way to make triangles by using squares, strips, and the Square in a Square Ruler. Every triangle will have perfect points. 1 hour minimum
